Do you know about the changes to the EYFS from September 2025?

Suitable students on long-term placements, volunteers aged 17 or over, and apprentices aged 16 or over can be included in staff-to-child ratios at one level below their current level of study, provided they:

  • Are deemed competent and responsible by the provider.
  • Hold a valid and current Paediatric First Aid (PFA) qualification.

This aligns with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework, which stipulates that such individuals may be counted in ratios under these conditions GOV.UK.

For instance, an apprentice working towards a Level 3 qualification can be counted in Level 2 ratios if they meet the above criteria.

Additionally, it’s important to note that staff who obtained their Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications after 30 June 2016 must also hold a valid PFA qualification to be included in the required staff-to-child ratios eyalliance.org.uk.

For more detailed information, you can refer to the EYFS statutory framework document GOV.UK.
