From September 2026, schools across England will be expected to strengthen their approach to allergy management under new statutory guidance, commonly known as Benedict’s Law. The changes follow the tragic death of Benedict Blythe, whose family campaigned to improve allergy safety in schools.
What Does It Mean for Schools?
The new guidance aims to ensure schools are better prepared to prevent and respond to severe allergic reactions. Schools will be expected to:
- Have a clear allergy management policy.
- Ensure staff receive allergy awareness training.
- Have emergency procedures in place.
- Support pupils with individual healthcare plans.
- Ensure staff know how to recognise and respond to anaphylaxis, including the use of adrenaline auto-injectors.
These responsibilities apply to all staff who may supervise children, not just teaching staff.
